Nigerian poet and professor Ifeanyi Menkiti was born in 1940. He received his undergraduate degree from Pomona College and undertook graduate studies at Harvard University, receiving his Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1974. In 1958, he was awarded a prize in literature at the Eastern Nigeria Festival of the Arts. The author of three poetry collections, he taught at Wellesley College from 1973 until he died in 2019. He owned the Grolier poetry bookshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
