Born in 1929, Purushottama Lal was a teacher, translator, poet, and founder of Writers Workshop, a publishing company in India. He was born in Kapurthala, Punjab, and raised in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He Studied at St Xavier’s College, Calcutta, where he later started his teaching career. He held visiting positions at Hofstra University, the University of Illinois, and Ohio University, among others. Author of eight books of poetry, he received the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship in 1969. He died in 2010.
