Steve Chimombo (1945-)

Steve Chimombo is a poet based in South Africa. He attended the University of Malawi for his bachelor’s degree and for his postgraduate degrees he attended the University of Wales and the University of Columbia. His time in England and the United States exposed him to modernist writers, such as T.S. Elliot, which influenced his voice in poetry. His poetry is heavily influenced by Malawian oral tradition. His poems express the irony of writing under the Hastings Kamuzu Banda’s regime, with constricting censorship. His collection Napolo Poems shows this well.
