Taaitta Toweett

Taaitta Arap Toweett was a Kenyan politician, writer, and scholar. He was born in 1925 in Tebesonik, Kenya, and attended Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda, and the University of South Africa. After graduating from the University of South Africa in 1959, Toweett became a prominent politician in Kenya and held several government posts throughout his career. He was the Minister for Education from 1969 to 1974 and from 1976 to 1979. He also received a doctorate in linguistics from the University of Nairobi in 1977 while still serving in the government. Toweett was a poet, and his poem “Biafran Killings” was published in the 29th issue of the literary magazine Transition in 1968. He died in a car accident on October 8, 2007.
