Anne Spencer was a poet and activist born in Virginia. She was first enrolled in school at age 11 at the Virginia Theological Seminary and College (renamed Virginia University of Lynchburg). Her poetry was published in anthologies such as Caroling Dusk (1927) and the Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry (1973); she was the first African American woman to be featured in that collection. After her death, her work was collected in Time’s Unfading Garden: Anne Spencer’s Life and Poetry (1977).
