Matthew Arnold, born at Laleham-on-Thames, Middlesex, was an English poet and cultural critic. He published multiple collections: The Strayed Reveller in 1849, Empedocles on Etna, and Other Poems in 1852, Poems: A New Edition in 1853, and Poems: Second Series in 1854. He also wrote a work of social criticism, titled Culture and Anarchy, which was published in 1869. Literature and Dogma was published in 1873 and was a work of religious criticism.
