Sarah Orne Jewett was a regional fiction writer based in South Berwick, Maine. Her best-known work, The Country of Pointed Firs, like her other work, describes a declining seaport New England town. Her writing was heavily influenced by her childhood in Maine and the many fishing trips she went on with her father. Her experiences along the waters and coast of Main made up much of her education. As a child, she wrote about the surrounding areas and their neglected, shipless harbors and dying farms. In 1868, she published her first story, “Jenny Garrow’s Lover,” in The Flag of Our Union. Many other stories followed in other publications. She signed her earliest work as Alice Elliot or A.C. Elliot. Her first book, Deephaven, published in 1877, contained illustrations of a fictional New England town called Deephaven resembling her home of Berwick, Maine.
